I just got a job as a graphic designer at Sierra West Publications, in La Verkin. They gave me a G5 Mac, with a huge screen. It's pretty nice! I've been busy at work these last couple of days (since Tuesday), with the ol' 8am-5pm with a 1 hour lunch break at 12 noon. Long hours, but it's fun, and the workers are friendly.
Graphic design is difficult in the sense that what you create becomes (or offshoots from) a part of you. It is your creation, and sometimes it is difficult to offer up that intrinsically linked piece of work to others' judgement. It is sometimes stressful. However, I have somewhat free reign over the details of the design, which is nice. We'll see how my designs get accepted by people in general over the next few weeks - maybe if they accept their banners I will begin to feel more confident.

I understand what you mean and can empathize with the concept of being intrinsically linked to your work and feeling vulnerable to presenting it to the cold cruel world. This fear of failure is unfortunately what paralyzes many from trying new ventures, such as performing or doing other things that they love. Great rewards involve great risk...and the riskier the journey, often the greater the rewards. It takes courage to put yourself "out there" .
If I can offer one piece of advice it would be to try to separate yourself from your work and not allow your self esteem to become wound up too tightly in your job. This is a difficult thing to do. However, if you can learn to do this, it will lead inevitably to greater success.
You can't please all of the people all of the time. And yet, you will please some people all of the time. I think the key is to work to please yourself. If you are at peace and content with your work, then you will be happy. And if others also enjoy your work...well then..what a bonus! Like getting a jar of pickles given to you!
Way to go Sean. I am so proud of you. Congrats on your first job!! It is much better than flipping burgers!!
I know what you mean (that's how violin festivals are, the song is so much a part of you that you can't understand how someone could not see how much it means to you and criticize it, but that's a long story for another time). I'm sure they'll love whatever you give them. You're amazing. Those are long hours! You must really love what you're doing. Congratulations, and best wishes with your job. I'm positive you'll be wonderful.
